Network connectivity, communications and security Chapter 7 1. Local area networks (LANs) serve local areas and wide area networks (WANs) serve large areas. 2. A protocol is the common format for communication across a network. 3. A network is a collection of computers and peripherals that can communicate information and share resources. 4. The computers are all connected through a server. 5. The carrying capacity and speed at which a network can share information is called a bandwidth. (slow or poor bandwidths can slow down an organization) 6. Networks enable shared data, administrative tools, resources, files, academic tools or hardware. 7. Emails, mailing lists, discussion boards, chats, or videoconferences all occur across a shared network.
