As discussed in the article assigned for this discussion, nurses often seek out information in order to advance their knowledge in order to ensure that they are using the best evidence available to guide their practice (Anonymous, 2004). When I think of what information means to me as a practicing nurse, I first think of formal information such as research studies or textbooks. Other common sources of information for nurses in the practice environment are peers and policies of the institution in which they work. I agree with the assertion that the authors of this article have made that “information literacy is key to maintaining and developing your professional knowledge and competence” (Anonymous, p. 60). I think that increased information literacy is one of the valuable skills that may be gained through continuing formal education.
