Nursing is a dynamic and exciting profession. The face of health care is constantly changing. Today nurses need to have to ability to access the most up-to-date information in order to deliver care based on best practice guidelines. Entering into the profession of nursing require a lifelong commitment learning. This commitment to ongoing learning is an essential component to providing safe, competent care. Cadmus, E., Van Wynen, E., Chamberlain, B., Steingall, P., Kilgallen, M. E., Holly, C., & Gallagher-Ford, L. (2008) stated “Evidence based practice provides an important framework for self-directed lifelong learning that is essential in an era of rapid clinical advances and information explosion. This requires commitment by the individual practitioner.” (para.2) Of the participants only 50% had used the library within the hospital, so a noted limitation would be the nurses comfort in accessing information as well as interpretation. Anonymous (2004) explains how information and knowledge exist in a collaborative exchange, however it is dependent on many factors; such as the context in which the message is delivered and the interpretation of the person receiving the information. If context of delivery and interpretation of the individual were to be applied to nursing then one would assume that education, age, experiential knowledge would have significant influence on how a nurse would be able to apply information literacy into practice. Secco, M. L., Woodgate, R. L., Hodgson, A., Kowalski, S., Plouffe, J., Rothney, P. R., Sawatzky-Dickson, D., & Suderman, E. (2006) found the ability to access and utilise best practice information was influenced significantly by the nurses level of comfort and skill with using computers as well as related software. Therefore if comfort and skill have a detrimental impact on nurses ability to access evidence based practice this would indicate a need to include in our current BN curriculum. Educators need to embrace to idea of including information literacy into the curriculum in a creative way which allows the students to become familiar and comfortable with accessing and interpreting information.
