My name is Kathryn Erica MacGregor however my family and friends call me Katie. I was born October 21, 1982 in a small town formerly known as New Castle, New Brunswick. The city of Miramichi was formed in 1995 through the forced merging of two towns, Newcastle and Chatham. I graduated from the BN program at the University of New Brunswick in May 2008. I decided to do my preceptorship in hematology/oncology and then worked in an oncology setting specializing in ear, nose, and throat surgeries. After my first year of working at The Ottawa Hospital, I changed fields and pursued the geriatric rehabilitation/ restorative area of nursing at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Currently, I am on an education leave from work to pursue my studies in the MN program. One of the main reasons why I applied to the nurse practitioner graduate program is because it will expand my horizons on a professional level and allow me to advance my skills as a registered nurse. I feel that as a NP, I will have the opportunity to become more independent in a professional way. I am a registered nurse seeking a profession that offers a challenge as well as autonomy. One of my career goals would be concentrating on the gerontology aspect of the role of NP, specializing in caring for and treating the elderly population. As more baby boomers age, this is a field that will be in much demand. I have always enjoyed working with the elderly population, which started as a child, and growing up very close to my grandmother. I have many research interests related to healthcare. A strong interest of mine which first comes to mind is cerebral vascular accidents (CVA). Another research interest of mine is multiple sclerosis (MS). My uncle who passed away August 2010 was diagnosed with this debilitating disease when he was twenty-one years of age. I am very much interested in the management, treatment, and alternative treatment of MS. Alzheimer’s disease is also a very interesting topic and I enjoy learning more about the disease. I started volunteering at the Alzheimer’s society in August and plan on continuing, as it is a rewarding experience. When I am not working or studying I enjoy spending time with family and friends. On my spare time I enjoy biking outdoors, swimming, going for walks, travelling, cooking, exploring nature, and reading.
