Biography

Arthur was born about 1899. Arthur was the child of Henry Wiswell and Rose Rowland. Arthur passed away in 1983. [1]

The Associated Press. , Warrensburg , March 29— Fred Wiswell and Buck Deshazer Of Cass County, Mo., were sentenced to 20 years in prison here last night by a circuit court jury which convicted them of first degree robbery. Sam and Arthur Wiswell were acquitted on the same charges. They were charged with a robbery in Cass County last summer. Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Sifers of Springfield Mo., accused them of holding them up near Martin City as they were out riding in their car. The case was taken to Warrensburg for trial on a change of venue and after several postponements, began Monday morning. Ray L. Shubert, prosecuting attorney of Cass County, the scene of the robbery, opened for the defense, making a plea to the jury to give the defendants the death penalty He was followed by Nick M. Bradley one of the defense counsel. The next speak'er was Karl V. Shawver of Paola, Kan., another attorney for the defense, who was followed by Roy A. Jones Johnson County prosecutor who assisted the state. After him came P. H. Jackson, Kansas City lawyer, of the defense. The final appeals were made by Ira McLaughlin for the defendants and Assistant Attorney General A. B. Lovan for the state. The defense sought to discredit the testimony of Cora Deaken, one of the principal witnesses for the prosecution, and also called attention to the parts alleged to have been played by the several members of the band of five charged with robbery, pointing out that only two of the .defendants, Fred Wiswell and Buck DeShazer were said to have been directly concerned. In his final talk Lovan asked that Fred Wiswell and DeShazer be given the death penalty, Sam and Arthur Wiswell long term* penitentiary sentences and Russell Brewer, at. least the minimum penalty of ten years in the penitentiary. The case attracted unusual attention, the courtroom being jammed throughout the trial, with many spectators standing after the seating capacity of the room had been ta:;ed.
